The Kelleys Island Landowners Association (KILA) is again hosting an annual Candidate’s and Issues Forum at 1:00 P.M.  Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Estes School Gym.  All voters, landowners, and interested persons are invited to attend to hear from the candidates and village officials about their candidacy and the issues (levies) on the ballot and ask questions of them.

The following issues have been certified by the board of the Erie County Board of Elections for the November 2, 2021 General Election:

• Kelleys Island Village- Renewal, current operating expenses, 1.75 mills, for 5 years, commencing in 2021.
• Kelleys Island Village- Renewal and increase, emergency medical services, 1.57 mills, for 5 years, commencing in 2021.
• Kelleys Island Village- Additional, providing and maintaining motor vehicles, communications and other equipment used directly in the operation of a police department, 0.36 mill, for 5 years, commencing in 2021.

The KILA annual meeting will be on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at the Estes School. The agenda consists of:

• Election of directors to the board – 7 positions
• President’s Report of the highlights of KILA since the last Annual Meeting
• Discussion about future activities of KILA

The Board of Directors meeting will follow the annual meeting with the newly elected directors. Nominations for a director position should be sent to the Nominating Committee at info@kila.rocks. Any active KILA member may be eligible to be nominated.

This was a real “Community Effort” led by KILA.

Starting with the First Annual KILA Fish Fry on Friday (BIG thanks to Jennifer & Joel) and Frank (of Frank & Dean) for entertaining. Over 100 diners enjoyed the fried perch, sides, and desert prepared by KILA volunteers. It was so well accepted, that we await the 2nd annual Fish Fry.

Then on Saturday:

• The Parade with lots of “floats”, cars, village officials, Parade Marshals Chris Ashley & Jackie Taylor, and the Edison Chargers Marching Band of 75 Middle & High School students. Thanks Tom for organizing a memorable parade and to Lake Erie Shores & Islands (LESI) for a sponsoring grant.

• Island Singers – National Anthem
• The Edison Marching Band concert
• Fat City Band who played all afternoon keeping spirits high

The always popular KILA Raffle will be back this year.  A maximum of 500 tickets at $20 will be sold.  Prizes will be as previously: 1^st: $2500, 2^nd: $1000, 3^rd: $500, 4^th: $250, 5^th: $100.  The Drawing will be at Homecoming on August 14^th.  KILA board members will be selling tickets.  Funding for projects like the trash containers for the village and VFW flags comes from fund raisers like the annual raffle, Homecoming, and donations.  Get yours before we sell out.

The KI VFW Post 9908 purchased and installed American Flags along East & West Lakeshore, Division, Chappel, and Addison streets. They really dress up the downtown area.   KILA is proud to donate $500 to the VFW toward this project.  The donation was made to VFW Commander Paul Burns at the Memorial Day ceremony by members of the KILA board of directors.

The 2021 KILA Kards have been mailed last week to active members from 2021 and 2020. You should receive them this week at the mailing address in our records. If you don’t receive the Kards by July 5th, please let us know at info@kila.rocks.

If you have not renewed your membership for 2021, please do so.

And, don’t forget HOMECOMING on August 13 & 14th at the Pavilion.

Septic System Maintenance

This year, KILA is partnering with Franklin Sanitation to promote awareness of the importance to our environment of maintaining your septic systems. Your active KILA membership (new or renewal) this year automatically enters you in a drawing for a free septic tank pump out (up to 1000 gal.) from Franklin Sanitation.  The drawing will be held at Homecoming on August 14th.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you have your system inspected (in general) every three years by a licensed contractor and have the tank pumped, when necessary, generally every three to five years. Note: The KILA Kards will be resumed this year. Active members will benefit by getting discounts from local businesses. The cards are planned to be mailed by the end of May.

In support of Earth Day, KILA is sponsoring a Dumpster Day on Saturday April 24th.
We will have two dumpsters at Seaway Marina, at the “bend” of Lakeshores rd.  One is for metal scrap only, and the other for household discards (e.g. mattresses, broken feature, etc.).  No hazardous scrap/ materials, daily trash or garbage, etc.

All KILA members may bring their spring cleaning discards.

December 6, 2020 Message from the Chairman: Joe Wolfe

Subject: Update Information of Frontier Internet Service for Kelleys Island Residents

During the last two years we have worked with Frontier to deliver faster more reliable Internet service to our Community. First with the DSLAM project that was completed from Pauline Rd to Titus Rd. Those addresses that fall into “Pauline” can experience stable 5-15 Megabyte service. The remaining DSLAM installations were put on hold to test a new fixed wireless product for Frontier, and they chose Kelleys Island as a beta site for their entire company.

Testing began Oct 2018 of upgrading antennas and radios on the water-tower. In mid 2019, 6 test locations were selected to represent some of the toughest and most remote locations on the Island, along with some more direct sites to the water tower. It was challenging to say the least, leaves, trees, and poor topography caused many issues.

In early 2020,Frontier made a break through: replaced antennae with omni directional technology and continued testing. Most of the test sites experienced at some times very fast speeds 30-40 meg, but also experienced intermittent service, which turned out to be a product of constant remote testing. August of this year, beta equipment was replaced with production equipment and mounted on the test addresses.

I’m happy to report for the last 2-3 months we have experienced faster reliable Internet service. The Fixed Broadband service is now available for sales. I have attached the pricing and products available. Please feel free to comment or ask questions via the comment section of the TODC Website.
